Web Traffic Review Sites
Can you trust their results?
You might be part of the Toolbar ranking people inadvertently or on purpose.
You might be in the SEO industry and want to make sure your rankings are up so you tell all your friends and family to surf your website with your favorite toolbar.
In 2005 I did a test on ranking with a new domain.
I'm not going to list the domain because it's not really important. The toolbar I used isn't important either for what I'm about ready to offer the SEO community.
I stumbled on this issue when I was testing toolbars on SSL enabled websites.
Privacy rules state and I'll paraphrase, "Once a browser is under SSL connections third party tracking and data mining plug-ins need to stop".
The regulation isn't worded like that specifically but you get the idea. Once you connect to your bank to login those toolbar collection bandits are to stop collecting form field information.
Now do you get it? Your feedback is allowing them to collect all the data you enter into forms. And, if they didn't shut down under SSL connections it would include your bank account passwords or at least your usernames.
During my testing years ago I found only one company offering a custom shopping toolbar that claimed to offer you discounts if you used their toolbar. Their toolbar collected data no matter how long you were on the SSL connection. I wrote them about it and the canceled my online coupon subscript. I was so sad I didn't get to compete with anyone.
Anyway, that isn't what I'm going to share it's how I tested the toolbars that I'm going to share.
I used 2 computers that had dial up modems and two different free dial up accounts. Peoples and NetZero which Is NetZero and Earthlinks dial up. It doesn't matter as long as you have a couple of computers and a couple of dial up accounts you're good to go.
Next, create a desktop macro that launches your favorite Internet browser with your loaded toolbar.
Your goal is to surf 3 to 5 websites and to make sure 2 to 3 pages are from your website.
Enter more macro time. ...
Now, once you surfed Google, Yahoo, Bing, MSN, and your site for a couple of pages.
What you'll find is your ranking in these toolbar sites will increase. The IP address with your dial-up will change most likely on each connection. The Macro will run 24/7.
You can test this bad bad method of faking a increase in traffic if you would like.
I'm sharing this so you know ranking is only a reference to how many times the toolbar has visited your website.
