Stuxnet rootkit, USB drive, Virus, Worm, Infected, how to prevent complete data loss before viruses, worms, rootkits hit. Listen to what the Xtreme Computer Technicians do.

Browsing your USB device root and you can be infected? What!?!

It's true, virus developers have truly produced one of the best methods of infecting computers.

For now, you need to actually download, copy or save attachments with the .lnk extension.

But it will not be long before this type of worm is modified to media and other file types.

Check your Antivirus to make sure this new rootkit is part of your virus database. Be sure if you download music and videos your AV software interfaces with your download program.

Always scan files within download folders before viewing them.

Because of the time differences between virus creation and virus detection we recommend the following steps and will help each of you setup your computer to defend against the unknown.

First I'll share with you want technicians do to keep their computers clean and running up to speed. We tech's use workstations to scan infected drives and work to keep our virus cleaning systems clean and fast.

Fact: There is no single answer or cure for all viruses. There are hundreds of anti virus programs on the market. Limit your system to only one (1) anti virus program. We have seen cases where more than one AV program on systems will actually cancel out all protection. More is not better.

We use only one AV and have used the same AV software since 1998. Our systems have been infected but always cleaned.

The questions that need to be asked are:

1. How long has the virus been on my computer before detection?

2. What information did this virus collect about my computer or my personal information?

When you don't know what the virus did you should take action and change all passwords used online and on your local network. It's best to change your passwords every 15 days to limit any issues long term.

Acronis Home 2010 backup software.

AVG Security AV Software.

We offer as a service to home and business users a full image drive backup on new computers and your current computer systems.

What we would advise new computer users to do is to skip the backup and restore offered by your computer manufacturer and install Acronis software in place. When you first purchase a computer remove the junk that is installed then create a backup. This will be your master backup. You should store this on a external hard drive.

We offer online storage for our local clients and customers. We can restore your full system over a private network or run a recovery drive to your location (applies to service contract only).

Backups should be on a daily and weekly bases. Only changes to your system will be backed up after your first full backup. This way we can scan the backup files for any viruses. Once we detect the virus we can offer a date prior to the infection to recovery your hard drive.

Then we will separate your working documents from other backups to recover your saved documents.

This might sound complicated and it should because this is what technicians do on a daily bases. When you sign up with one of our service agreements this system services is completed by one of our in house technicians.

The key is to take preventative steps before infections hit your system.
