Set up a Therapist computer system using Windows 7 and Assessement Software. There is allot of different ways you can setup Assessment computers. I have seen many in the Assesement medical industry make the same mistakes. The mistakes they make are in how they setup their computer to be able to comply with HIPAA regulations. There is only one method to setup your computer and it's one software application at a time reviewing each one at a time. Take baby steps and learn from IT professionals that know process and procedures.

Setup Therapist computer Windows 7 and Assessement Software.

UPDATE 8-10-2012: I've completed the "Testing and Research" and found a combination of issues can make your system suspect to a user hack. To be compliant is one thing, to make your system ADHD protected you need to do more than just software configuration. I've setup a virtual simulation on a protected server that is built and configured using all 240+ checks published at NIST.org and HIPAA. It wasn't easy but it is possible to follow the rules completely. Nice thing about it is once you have one setup you can clone other systems the same. If you are interested this is a IT Consultant service available to you.

Working with proprietary software from MHS and Pearson's can at times be challenging. I have run into major problems with therapist software using SQL 2005. We need to set the core system to accommodate more than one software brand. Assessement setup.

Today I'm working with a new Lenovo ThinkPad Intel i5 Core 64bit Windows 7 Professional. This system will be used for remote access as well as therapist testing in the field.

First we needed to find a new fast portable computer that would offer the green power saving features as well as super fast response and number crunching to handle the older test software the therapist industry uses.

I selected the Lenovo ThinkPad for the OS and Processor. The hope is we can do 2 to 3 hours of testing without the system slowing down due to battery levels.

The very first thing you need to do with any new computer is setup the basic system settings. This means installing your anti virus software, firewall and updating drivers and the operating system. Lenovo has a software tool called Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox that makes checking updates for your system very easy to follow.

I've installed the following software as part of the initial system setup for the Therapist Assessement computer.

  1. Microsoft Security Essentials
  2. Internet Explorer 9
  3. Office Home and Business 2010
  4. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (Primary)
  5. SQL Server 2005 (Note, if not required do not install this use No. 4)
  6. SQL Management Console. (Used to debug database issues later.)

Everything else only required system updates and took about 2 hours to put things in order.

If there is one thing I will remember it is the MHS CPT SQL database username and password. UID: sa PWD: +mHs123+

(I do not agree with the software vendor of changing the password for the sa account if you install it using the auto launch installation. Also, it creates elevated permissions as administrator of the machine to run. It will not run as a standard user on Windows 7. This makes it very dangerous to have on a internet connected system. Google "Hacking sa SQL account".)

The software attempts to install SQL 2005 and we do not want that old application so when I get down to the CPT software section I'll show you how to install without SQL then later setup the SQL 2008 R2 with the correct SA account. But we need to setup Pearson's software first in the SQL server or we risk MHS corrupting the full installation.

Pearson Therapist Software

Setting up the 2 platforms for PsychCorp Center

If you visit their download site you can get the updated copy. I typically create a file folder to store all the downloads in then I start the installation process.

Create a new folder on your C:\ drive. Name it Therapist_Software Use an underscore between words.

Within that folder create the following folders.

  • PsychCorpCenter_Platform_1
  • PsychCorpCenter_Platform_2

Download all related software and licensed software you own to the two folders based on the platform.

I'll be installing the following:

  1. CPT II (Manual and Update History PDF)
  2. CPT-K Kiddie

Pearson Assessment aka PsychCorp http://www.pearsonassessmentsupport.com/ offered both 32Bit and 64Bit and worked like a champ.

The issues with most all Therapist Software and Assessment Software companies is their database. It seems to be one thing they never want to upgrade.

I really wanted to have everything running off of SQL 2008 R2 Express but the Q-Local 2 and CPT needed SQL 2005 or it wouldn't install. They claim you can by pass the SQL 2005 installation but when it came to connecting it never seemed to work if you had MHS CPT and Q-Local applications running from the same computer. The naming which also shows the versions is different and manually I wasn't able to change this even with their technical support.

In short I had to install SQL 2005 Express and apply the SP3 . I'll look at it in a week or two to see if I could change the connection string to the 2008 and transfer the data.

On a very positive note the applications running at 64Bit on this new Levono i5 core ThinkPad are quick. The launch time and program response time will pay this computer off in months instead of years. Therapists that have to wait for Local-Q even if it only runs in 32Bit mode don't have to wait anymore for the start up. It's about 2 seconds to working. Everything else seems to be perfect and as planned must faster than the P4 systems the office uses.

  • Q-Local System 2 (32bit mode with SQL2005 EOL by Microsoft)
    • Runs in 32Bit Windows 7 Pro mode on 64Bit hardware fast and good. Drawback was the SQL 2005 installation but other than that this software will work.
  • MHS CPT-II and CPT-K using SQL 2005 works very well and fast on the Windows 7 Pro 64Bit OS with 64Bit hardware.

Failed Software

BASC-2 ASSIST Plus Scoring and Reporting System (32bit mode)

  • Failed to launch. Hangs on start image and does not complete it's loading. Shows process running but not compatible with 64Bit hardware and Windows 7 64Bit OS.
  • Support stated it will not run and they do not have plans on making it work at this time.
  • SQL 2005 (out of date and EOL by Microsoft 32bit only)

Special Note to Therapists: Most all the updates I have seen are related to scoring and are not actually technical articles for your IT person but rather an article written for the therapists to read. This is very important and if you follow the link to the CPT II manual and update history you will see why. It's only 1 page so take a look at what corrections have been made and what the issues were.

PS: If you think Excel format you need to read the help files and the manual again. The db's are not exported to standards MS Office users know for the most part. I have a few scripts which will be available that convert some applications.
