Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800C0148
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): No

Summary: Added Hotmail HTTPS link to download email and this error started showing up. The error didn't indicate any POP3 accounts but also did not indicate Hotmail account.

Technical Brief: Port 0 will be your Antivirus Proxy Port issue 99% of the time. But, if your Antivirus email scanner had been working then most likely it still is working and something else is not right.

In this case, 15 email accounts setup as POP3, SMTP and AVG 2012 Email Scanner were running fine for months.

Added HTTPS Hotmail Email retrieval to the email accounts and the error occurred at random account downloads and times.

Removing accounts, ONLY AFTER YOU EXPORT YOUR EMAIL!!!

  1. Click File or the Quick Access Toolbar
  2. Export Email
  3. Select a good folder or make a new folder and save ALL your email and contacts.
  4. Verify the exported files before working with accounts.)\

I found this to be the HTTPS connection timeout in my AVG 2012 Proxy Email Scanner. In English, my Antivirus program thought Hotmail or my HTTPS online email was taking way too long to respond.

In fact, it needed me to rest the account after closing down the software. Here are the steps I took that corrected this issue under my settings.

Remember, your issue might be slightly different and the fix might not work because we all have different email services and the variables of your settings to take into account.

  1.  Export all Email Prior to removing any account.
    1. Click the menu down arrow.
    2. Select "Export Email"
    3. Save the headaches for the techs.
    4. Continue
  2. Removed the HTTPS accounts that were added.
  3. Tested Microsoft Mail Live to see if error was gone. (it was)
  4. Disabled AVG Email Scan (Only for 10 minutes)
  5. Closed Microsoft Mail Live application and closed all emails.
  6. Open Microsoft Mail Live
  7. Created HTTPS Hotmail account (again)
  8. Enabled AVG Email Scan.
  9. Clicked Send and Recieve.
  10. All is back to normal, AVG Scanning emails and no errors.

I'm not saying you'll have your issue resolved but if the scenario above matches your issue most likely this is what happened. Now, the key is to test after each step you take. When I removed the HTTPS account to Hotmail the error wasn't shown. So that gave me the path to troubleshoot my HTTPS to antivirus application.

It was timing and once it synchronized it is fine. Now, this doesn't mean this error will not reoccur. It is very possible so keep the steps in mind. I didn't have to run a backup or export because this is HTTPS Hotmail that only removes it from the online server after you delete it and empty your deleted items folder. But, better safe than to delete your Hotmail, Right?
