Troubleshooting Microsoft Live Mail Client for Windows
Microsoft Live Mail is a free email client offered by Microsoft as an alternative to using Outlook and the retired Outlook Express. For those that are having software issues with this application this might be a good place to look for answers.
I as well as other technicians will start posting the most common issues we hear about regarding Microsoft Live Mail Client.
We have some troubleshooting steps that you might want to follow as well as a story of one support person that didn't follow proper troubleshooting steps.
Number 1, BACKUP! It's called Export and before you allow anyone to REMOVE YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT you best look for some very important things first.
Just a brief then you'll find the details in the articles below. But for now,
If you're using HTTPS like Hotmail then your emails are stored on the remote server and downloaded to your local machine. Basically keeping a copy in both locations until you delete it from your local computer.
If you are using HTTPS other than Hotmail verify you are connecting with and saving the emails until deleted locally.
POP3 users if in the Advanced section it doesn't show checked "Save a copy on server" DO NOT remove your local account until you export all your account information and email. (Please, Please and Please do that first.)
IMAP People you know your email is always stored on the server and you view the headers locally. You need to validate your PURGE settings on Close or Delete. It's different and basically a two step process but it provides some very good backup structure in that the server is less likely to fail. (Based on percentages nothing more)
Everything else, EXPORT aka BACKUP your emails before working troubleshooting errors.
