First and foremost I’d like to introduce myself to you but before I do let's take care of the Robots.TxT business.
If you do not want to have our comment checker test any page in your website feel free to add the following to your Robots.txt file.
User-agent: XCTM/1.0 Disallow: /
Our API will identify itself with the UserAgent of XCTM/1.0. You will also see a link back to this page in your server log files.
We do not copy content or your website. We only index your URL and we only test pages that are manually entered into our single page test application.
If you are a Site Owner or Webmaster and have signed up with our service be sure to note the UserAgent XCTM/1.0 which will be seen in your server logs.
This is our API UserAgent and it will only touch your site without downloading any content except for your robots.txt page.
Bandwidth usage is nearly non existent from our API.
The API will pull your Robots.Txt file each and every time it makes a visit just to make sure things haven't changed.
If you have problems with our API XCTM/1.0 please contact us.
We do not test or check any SSL pages.
We will be adding the Meta Tag Robots as soon.
Thank you for respecting our API and for allowing us to check your site for SideWiki Comments.
My name is Murray W. founder of Xtreme Computer and Developer of sometimes off the wall applications.
When I read all the negative comments made mostly by SEO companies (guess they now how to be Number #, just scream like a little girl.) I thought it was time to start showing some Positive feelings about what you could actually do with SideWiki that no other toolbar will let you.
You might know about Compete, Alexa and a few other toolbars that promise the world but offer you nothing but “Monitored Pages”.
If I really thought Google was collecting Purchasing Information like Alexa and Compete I’d be writing nothing regarding new APIs. But because they are offering a way for people to post comments using the tool associated with web pages I thought it would be good to really look into the whole process and reverse engineer these processes to make it work for the site owner. Today I have about 10 APIs running but only 3 out of my testing phase.
This should be enough for any webmaster or company to use and keep track of SideWiki posts.
I have to place a note about some misleading things that many Band Wagon Players jumped on.
1. A Hashed URL does not stop Posting or Reading of SideWiki comments. Not in the way they claim. Read my forum post and follow the example links and you will see Hash is Hashed.
2. Charging $39 to $500 for monitoring services is nuts and I bet soon enough your hosts will have scripts that will alert you, maybe..
3. Look for Demo’s. Before I saw the first “I’ll monitor your site for $39.00 per month for a blog and $99.00 per month for a business.” Posts I had already deleted from my records over 50,000 monitored pages. My sites didn’t have comments so I had to make a few but Goolge has hundreds of comments so for my testing I monitored the Google SideWiki page for new comments.
If I couldn’t monitor Google’s main SideWiki page then do you think I could monitor your sites?
The fact is simple: Monitoring is only a small part of the process. I’d monitor your site for $10 bucks a month but who’s going to read the comment and help you clean up things when the comment is negative or spam?
Here’s how other companies that are offering to monitor word it.
“We will alert you..” , “It is your responsibility to do Damage Control”.
If you are the normal web site owner which 9 out of 10 times makes you the owner of the business do you really have time to handle “Damage Control”?
Google has given their vote on the issue by monitoring SideWiki comments. I’ve seen Google people on this site and one actually gave a comment the Vote Yes.
So they are doing what they said they would do.
But when things get really hot and postings are rolling in will they still be able to come over and give a vote?
Now it’s time to start thinking about an outside company. But for today you can handle things for the most part.
Try out the API I have made. If you are a Java or PHP programmer and would like to create the end users code feel free to do so. I’ll link or post it here and give you full create for the what you made.
It takes more than one developer to make things work. I’ve covered enough ground now it’s time to pool some great ideas and launch this monitoring system for the good and not for the “Band Wagon Get Rich Overnight” crowd.
The Value of SideWiki Comment Monitoring
Now that you made it this far and know how I feel about those that think they will capitialize off of SideWiki let me offer a few suggestions to you as a webmaster.
SideWiki by Google does offer you many different ways of promoting your website better than before. You can create your own SideWiki Comment rating system or use the one I have created that reposts comments you have selected or visitors to your site have selected as good comments within your website for all to read.
It's all about how creative you are and what your fears are.
For Merchants the number one fear would be cross marketing or comments suggestion other sites. Google doesn't allow this and will remove them. But you can take one step in the direct of customer service which will win in the long run. Competitors that need to "Slam" or "Spam" you should be taken as a complement to you because it is clear they fear you and your business.
SEO's and SEM's will fear this system the most because of their overinflated costs to the consumers which are website owners looking to gain rankings in search engines. Fresh Content and Meta tags is the best way and allowing SideWiki Comments with links out to Blogger, Twitter and other locations will offer the backlinks you need. So what is it they really do for you?
Take your time setup your account with XtremeComputer.Com. I'll see when you do. Then send me a note for your API key and I'll setup your account to start monitoring for SideWiki comments on your site.
It's going to cost me directly Time and Services so I'm placing the Honor System into this agreement. If you find I've saved you time then offer that gratitude in the form of a donation to the API development. I can't take a check made out to "Thanks" to the bank. And it doesn't buy the Coffee needed to keep programming either. But do this only if you feel I have saved you time which we know is equal to money for most.
Regards,
Murray W.
