Did you find your version of XP is missing a file? According to HP and their lowest cost printer DeskJet D1660 Windows XP is missing the USB.Inf file.
Here's the Message:
quote: USB.Inf This file does not exist or is the incorrect version and is required for installation to continue. The file is part of Windows and is provided on the Windows Installation CD.
If you look in the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder you'll notice the USB.INF isn't listed.
Be sure to change the View of the folder to show Hidden files and folders.
Download or extract the USB.INF file and place it into the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder and everything will install.
I'll extract the USB.INF from the XP family of disks later this week. If you need it earlier send a note via the contact us link from the left menu near the bottom and I'll attach it to an email.
